The Theatre’s construction started in 1862, based on a project by architect Antonio Tegani. It has a horseshoe layout with three tiers of boxes, a gallery and a large central box modelled on the Civic Theatre that had been inaugurated a few years earlier in Reggio Emilia. Its activities were discontinued in the wake of the Second World War; it was subsequently restored and reopened in 1988.
